One of the reasons why so many of us have a hard time falling asleep is because our brains are full of all these open loops. We’ve got all these undone things and then those undone things kind of stack on top of each other until most people are just living in this state of constant overwhelm which by the time you go to hit the sack for the night, you’ve got a lot of energy going on and it’s really uncomfortable.
It’s no fun to go to sleep, not sleep, wake up tired, and repeat the cycle all over again. And sure, you can use external things, you can use stimulants and you can use all sorts of pills and things but there’s much more elegant way that you can actually say goodbye to your day and enter maybe the deepest rest of your life, have amazing dreams and wake up feeling energized. And I found this quite by accident because I was having this issue myself. I had so many things going on.
I was involved in all these projects. Some of them were exciting, some of them were kind of a drag, and so I started doing this out of necessity. And here’s the way it works. Before you go to sleep, this is what you do, it’s really simple. All you need is a pen, piece of paper, literally just something to just jot a note down. What you’re doing is you write down three, four, maybe five things that happened during the day that were positives for you.
That might sound too simple. but test it for yourself. When you write down three or four a five things that happened during the day, little wins, little positive things, maybe it was just a nice conversation you had with someone. Maybe you faced a fear. Maybe you did something that was, you know, felt new and felt bold. But it doesn’t matter how big or how seemingly small the action was or the experience. The important thing is that you write it down.
Get it out of your mind, get it out of your brain get it down on paper, and do three, four, or five. Doing less than three really doesn’t allow you to get the momentum of your thoughts going. Doing more than five can kind of turn it into a chore. So three, four, or five things. Anything that was a positive experience that day, write it down. And here’s what this does. It allows your brain to experience this very rare satisfaction.
Most of the time your brain your mind is never satisfied because what most of us do is we’re looking forward we’re looking ahead to the things that haven’t happened yet and we’re occupying our thoughts with that. So as a result we always feel like we’re behind. Can you relate? This simple exercise, this nighttime ritual allows you to literally put the day at rest. And what’s really interesting is if you want a little bonus exercise on this, after you write down three, four, or five things you’ll notice that you’re feeling good. But then what you can do is you write down how you want to feel when you wake up in the morning.
I know that sounds stupid simple but I bet you haven’t done it. Write down how you want to feel when you wake up in the morning. And I’ve taught this to hundreds of people and everybody writes down their own unique thing. Some people say I want to wake up feeling energized. I want to wake up feeling confident. I want to wake up feeling clear. One person wrote I want to wake up feeling really turned on. It’s your list, you can write whatever you want.
I remember one time in a seminar in Atlanta, a woman did this exercise the day after the event. And she messaged me on Facebook and she said I’ve got to tell you, I’ve had extreme anxiety about going to sleep for over a decade and the reason why was because she had a very traumatic experience happen in her life and what ended up happening was she would wake up in the morning and just for a moment she was feeling really good and then she would remember this trauma that happened and it just caused her an extreme amount of pain.
So she actually dreaded going to sleep because she knew that it would mean waking up into that feeling again. So I said you’ve got nothing to lose, give this a shot and see how it feels. She messaged me the next day and she messaged, OMFG I can’t believe it, she said I’ve had anxiety every morning for over ten years. This morning I woke up after doing the nighttime ritual, and I woke up feeling peaceful. And that peace has lasted throughout the day. In one day. A decade of anxiety gone.
That’s how powerful our minds are if we decide to take control. So give it a shot for yourself, you’ve got nothing to lose. And you’re got potentially a lot to gain. Write down three, four, or five positive experiences that happened during the day and then write down how you want to feel when you wake up in the morning. It’s your list, nobody’s going to see this. This is for you. Here’s what I anticipate will happen for you. You will sleep deeper, you may have some really great interesting, informative dreams, and when you wake up in the morning, notice how you’re feeling. That’s it. It’s not more complicated than that.
You really can get good at life. You have all the resources right now be able to do that. So give it a shot and let us know how it turns out for you.
