I will never forget this martial arts class that I was teaching. It was a huge part of my life. I mean, I taught thousands and thousands of classes, but this one particular class stands out in my mind and I think it actually contains a secret, a deep truth, for living the kind of life that most of us actually want to live.
So I’m teaching this class, and we’ve got about 30 or 40 kids that are here, and they’re all following the curriculum, they’re following the plan, the parents are clapping, everybody’s into it, and, at that time, a big part of my job was to educate the parents too, about, hey, we’re teaching life skills and all of that.
So I ask this one child, in the middle of everybody, I stop and I say, what do you want to be when you grow up? And, y’know, that’s like a typical answer that boring grown-ups ask kids. What do you want to be when you grow up? And you know what he says? He thinks real hard, and then he looks at me and says, an adult, sir. The audience died, I start, let’s go this way, ’cause you’re going to need to hear this.
That kid taught me a lesson. Because here I’d been, following the path, I’d been teaching other people, teaching a lot of kids, a lot of their parents to follow to path, and what this seven year old taught me was so powerful. I said, what do you want to be when you grow up? And he said, an adult. It doesn’t get much simpler than that. And so, how many of the efforts that we make, how many of the actions that we take, how many of the goals that we have aren’t actually our goals to start with, they’re actually other people’s goals? How many of your expectations for yourself were placed on you by someone else?
I mean, think about it. How many times have you known what you had to do, but you got into it and it just didn’t feel inspired, it didn’t feel like it was your idea anymore? All of a sudden, you realize that you’re trying to win a game that someone else has created, or worse, you’re trying to win a game that someone else has forced you to play. What do you want to be when you grow up? An adult.
So, here you are. Now, whether you’re grown up or not, I’ll leave that to you to be the judge, but what I do know is this, that all you really need to move forward in a way that’s right for you, to play your own game, all you really need is clarity around a few simple things. And, while most of us are really used to the idea of getting clear on what we need to do or getting clear on how we need to do it.
What’s the plan, what’s the strategy, what do I need to do? That’s cool, and those are important, but I’ve discovered and found that there are actually five clarities, and if we have clarity around these five things, everything else just sort of flows.
So, the first one is not just who you are. I mean, that’s a very popular question, right? Especially in personal development and spiritual work and all of this, who am I? But there’s actually a deeper question below that, not just who you are, but what you are. I mean, what you are as a human being.
What are you? Are you really some container that needs to be filled up with information so that then you can succeed? I don’t know, seems to me that rather than being some empty container that you need to fill up with the right information, maybe instead of being an empty container, what if you’re actually a conduit?
What if you’re not only a receiver of ideas, but you’re a transmitter of ideas? What if you can not only transmit energy through your thought, your words, your actions, your feelings, what if you not only transmit that, but what if you could also receive that?
I mean, think about it. Where do songs come from? Where does art come from? Where do ideas come from? Maybe the same place that babies come from. I mean, not exactly, specifically. But that creative energy. You’re a human being.
Human beings have access to unlimited creative energy. So, what you are is a receiver and a transmitter of this vibrational frequency. Who you are is how that frequency shows up in the world. Who you are is your character, your values. Who you are is this avatar that you get to show up in the world as. Your beliefs, your language, your expressions, your fashion, your style, your lifestyle.
That’s who you are. And once you understand what you are, and then you make some decisions about who you are and who you want to be, well then, the last three clarities really pretty simple, they just unfold very naturally. And that is, why are you here?
What are you here to do? And how are you here to do that? Why are you here? Now, the answer to that question has been provided by a lot of people throughout thousands of years of human history, and for most people, instead of answering that question for themselves and finding out why they believe they’re here, they’ve looked for others to tell them, and I would suggest that you totally have the choice, that if you want to allow somebody else to tell you your purpose for being on this planet, go for it, that’s one of your choices.
I also believe that there’s not another human being on this planet that’s qualified to tell you why you’re here. ‘Cause they’re not you. And they may have some regurgitated dogma, they may have some old recycled doctrine that has been watered down and bastardized and plagiarized and manipulated to get you to think the way that somebody else would like you to think, and if that’s your choice, to accept that doctrine, to absorb that dogma and claim it as your own, your own philosophical, psycho-spiritual operating system, go for it, that’s one of your choices too. And I’m not here to make that right or wrong.
But I believe that nobody has the answer to that question, why are you here, except for you. And it’s a question that’s worth exploring, and as you dive into that and you start to find your own answers to that question, why you’re here, you’ll begin to feel a signal, you’ll begin to feel a frequency. You’ll begin to feel ideas that you just know are the right ideas. And as you begin to feel into why you’re here, the final two clarities will reveal themselves quite effortlessly and quite naturally.
As you begin to get a feeling for why you’re here, automatically with that feeling comes a very natural sense of what you’re here to do. Your life’s work. Your mission. What is the grand work that you’re here to bring into the world through your own unique creative energies? And there’s not another person on the planet just like you, and there never has been, and there never will be, and you have a unique reason for being here. You also have a unique work to do while you’re here. And if you believe that that work is to pass some sort of test that had been created for you, that’s fine.
Personally, I don’t believe that life is a school, I don’t believe that we’re here to get the answers right or avoid getting them wrong. I think this is the bonus level. I think this is the bonus around in what is perhaps the greatest game ever created. I think that, somewhere along the way, we all just won the body lottery, we got a body, and now we’re here. But the outcome of the game is not in question, there’s no winning or losing.
What if you’ve already won? So your work, perhaps, is not to gain entry to some fantastic after-party where everybody wears white and there’s beautiful harp music. And if that’s your belief, I’m not here to make that wrong. But what if your work, what if what you’re here to do is to simply enjoy the choices that you make? What if what you’re here for is to simply enjoy being you? And what if the joy of being you, what if that’s enough?
And what if, through the joy of being you, through this experience of well-being, what if through this experience of just being you and being happy with who you are, what if actions arose naturally out of that, and now you’re in this fifth clarity.
Now you’re in the final clarity. Not only what you are and who you are and why you’re here and what you’re here you to, but how you get to do that. And there’s a big difference between doing something ’cause you have to and doing something because you get to.
Taking an action that feels so inspired, it feels so right, that to not take the action would be painful, and that’s the sweet spot. And when you’re in that space, and I know you’ve experienced that in your life, when you’re in that space and you allow yourself to operate from that place, the actions that you take are so much more powerful, you get so much more done, and the beautiful irony is, you’re not doing it to get something done, you’re doing it because it feels good to do.
And when you are operating in that frequency, and when you’re taking action because it feels good to take, not because you have to or not because somebody else told you to, you become magnetic. You begin to attract opportunities and ideas. You begin to attract other people who also share their own version of that vision, and then you’re all just collaborators, you’re not competing with each-other anymore. You’re creating something with the people that resonate with you, and the people who you resonate with.
So these five clarities, what you are, who you are, why you’re here, what you’re here to do, and how you’re here to do that, nobody can know the answers to those except for you. And the lesson that I got from my martial arts student, all those years ago, what do you want to be when you grow up? An adult, sir. You already know. You already know. So maybe this message has just been a series of reminders for you. I look forward to seeing you on the next piece of the journey.
